Quick answer: loan repayment

Overview of the Repayment Calculator

The Repayment Calculator shows the regular repayment on a loan and what happens when you overpay. Enter the amount, rate and term, then add a monthly, yearly or one-time overpayment to see the interest saved and how much sooner you are debt-free.

Overpaying early in the loan has the biggest effect because interest is highest then. Check with your lender whether overpayments are allowed and whether they carry a fee. Compare with the Loan Calculator and Mortgage Payoff Calculator.

How We Calculate

The calculator applies the standard financial formulas step by step.

  1. Convert the annual rate to a monthly rate (÷ 12 ÷ 100) and the term to months.
  2. Work out the amount you actually borrow after down payment, trade-in, fees and any financed charges.
  3. Apply the EMI formula to get the fixed monthly payment.
  4. Build the schedule month by month: interest = balance × monthly rate; principal = payment − interest.
  5. Add up the interest and payments; with extra payments, repeat the schedule to find the interest and time saved.
EMI = P × r × (1 + r)ⁿ ÷ ((1 + r)ⁿ − 1)
r = annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100   n = years × 12
total interest = EMI × n − P

Repayment Calculator — Frequently Asked Questions

How do overpayments work?

They reduce the principal immediately, so you pay less interest each month afterwards and clear the loan sooner.

Is it better to shorten the term or lower the payment?

Shortening the term saves more interest. Keeping the payment the same and overpaying has the same effect.

Are there penalties for early repayment?

Some lenders charge a fee, especially on fixed-rate loans. Check your agreement.

When is overpaying not worth it?

If you have higher-interest debt or no emergency fund, those usually come first.

How much interest will I save?

Enter your overpayment in the calculator — the summary shows the exact interest and time saved.

Can I overpay once a year?

Yes — use the yearly extra payment box, for example a bonus paid every year.

How is the repayment calculator calculated?

It uses the standard formula: EMI = P × r × (1 + r)ⁿ ÷ ((1 + r)ⁿ − 1) The full method and a worked example are shown on this page.

Is this financial advice?

Can I use another currency?

Is my data stored?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing you enter is uploaded or saved.
