Quick answer: future value of an annuity

Overview of the Annuity Calculator

An annuity here means a series of equal deposits made at regular intervals. This calculator finds its future value — the accumulation phase of an annuity or recurring plan. Choose whether deposits are at the start (annuity due) or end (ordinary annuity) of each month.

To work out the income an annuity can pay out from a lump sum, use the Annuity Payout Calculator.

How We Calculate

The calculator applies the standard financial formulas step by step.

  1. Convert the annual rate into a growth factor for each month, using your chosen compounding: (1 + rate ÷ n)^(n ÷ 12).
  2. Start with the initial amount and, for each month, add the growth and then the deposit (or the deposit first if you choose the start of the month).
  3. Raise the deposit once a year if you set an annual increase.
  4. Repeat for every month of the period, recording the balance each year.
  5. Subtract total deposits from the end balance to get the interest earned; divide by (1 + inflation)^years for the value in today's money.
ordinary annuity: FV = PMT × ((1 + r)ⁿ − 1) ÷ r
annuity due: FV = PMT × ((1 + r)ⁿ − 1) ÷ r × (1 + r)
