Quick answer: the loan payment formula

Payment = P × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)^−n). A ₹10,00,000 loan at 9% over 5 years costs ₹20,758.36 a month and ₹2,45,501.31 in interest.

Overview of the Payment Calculator

The Payment Calculator answers two questions. Given a loan amount, rate and term, what is the monthly payment? Or given a payment you can afford, how long will it take to clear the loan? Both show the total interest and a yearly repayment schedule.

Paying more than the minimum shortens the term dramatically — try a few payment amounts in the second mode. For full options such as extra payments and fees use the Loan Calculator; to find the rate behind a payment use the Interest Rate Calculator.

How We Calculate

The calculator applies the standard financial formulas step by step.

  1. Convert the annual rate to a monthly rate (÷ 12 ÷ 100).
  2. Payment mode: apply the payment formula over the number of months.
  3. Payoff mode: step through the schedule — interest = balance × rate, principal = payment − interest — until the balance reaches zero.
  4. Total interest = total paid − loan amount.
payment = P × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)^−n)
months = −ln(1 − P × r ÷ payment) ÷ ln(1 + r)

Payment Calculator — Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a loan payment?

Use P × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)^−n) with the monthly rate and number of months.

How long will it take to pay off my loan?

Choose “Time to pay off”, enter the loan, rate and your monthly payment.

Why does a small increase in payment save so much?

Extra payment goes straight to principal, cutting the interest on every later month.

What if my payment is smaller than the monthly interest?

The loan would never be repaid; the calculator tells you the payment is too small.

Is the payment fixed over the term?

For a fixed-rate loan, yes. For floating-rate loans it changes when the rate changes.

Where can I see the full schedule?

A yearly schedule appears below the summary.

How is the payment calculator calculated?

It uses the standard formula: payment = P × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)^−n) The full method and a worked example are shown on this page.
