Quick answer: the original points formula

Points = calories ÷ 50 + fat ÷ 12 − fibre ÷ 5 (up to 4 g of fibre). A food with 250 kcal, 10 g fat and 3 g fibre scores 5 points on the classic formula.

Overview of the Weight Watchers Points Calculator

This calculator works out food points with the classic public formula and with an unofficial SmartPoints-style estimate that also uses saturated fat, sugars and protein. It is useful for comparing foods, but it is not the official Weight Watchers app and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Weight Watchers.

The current programme uses a proprietary food-scoring system that changes over time, so results will differ from the official app. Points are a tool for noticing food choices; pair them with a calorie target from the Calorie Calculator and see the Macro Calculator.

How We Calculate

The calculator applies the standard published formulas step by step.

  1. Original points: divide calories by 50 and fat by 12, add them.
  2. Subtract fibre ÷ 5, counting no more than 4 g of fibre.
  3. Round to the nearest whole number (not below zero).
  4. SmartPoints-style estimate: calories × 0.0305 + saturated fat × 0.275 + sugars × 0.12 − protein × 0.098, rounded.
original points = calories ÷ 50 + fat ÷ 12 − min(fibre, 4) ÷ 5

Weight Watchers Points Calculator — Frequently Asked Questions

How are Weight Watchers points calculated?

The programme has used different formulas over time. The original one used calories, fat and fibre; later versions use saturated fat, sugar and protein too.

Is this the official Weight Watchers calculator?

No. This is an independent, unofficial tool that uses published formulas. Weight Watchers is a trademark of its owner.

Why do my results differ from the app?

The official programme uses its own proprietary and regularly updated scoring, and some foods are assigned zero points.

Why does fibre reduce the points?

The original formula rewarded fibre, since fibre-rich foods are more filling. It counted up to 4 g.

Do points replace counting calories?

They simplify food choices, but weight change still depends on total energy intake.

Are points suitable for everyone?

Not if you have a history of disordered eating or a medical condition affecting diet — speak to a doctor or dietitian first.

It uses the published formula: original points = calories ÷ 50 + fat ÷ 12 − min(fibre, 4) ÷ 5 The full method and a worked example are shown on this page.

Is this medical advice?

No. The calculator gives general estimates for information and education. It cannot diagnose or treat anything, so please speak to a doctor or qualified professional about your own health.

Can I use US or Indian units?

Yes. Choose centimetres or feet and inches for height, and kilograms, pounds or stone for weight; the results are converted for you.

Is my data stored?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing you enter is uploaded or saved.
