Quick answer: how RMD is calculated

RMD = prior year-end balance ÷ the IRS life-expectancy factor for your age. A 75-year-old with a $500,000 balance has a factor of 24.6, so the RMD is $20,325.20.

Overview of the RMD Calculator

Required minimum distributions (RMDs) force you to start withdrawing from traditional IRAs and most workplace plans once you reach a certain age: 73 if you were born in 1951–1959 and 75 if born in 1960 or later. This calculator divides your balance at the end of last year by the factor in the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table.

Missing an RMD triggers a penalty tax, so mark the deadline. Roth IRAs have no RMDs for the owner. Plan the rest of your income with the Social Security Calculator and the Retirement Calculator.

How We Calculate

The calculator applies the standard financial formulas step by step.

  1. Work out your RMD starting age from your birth year (72, 73 or 75).
  2. Take the account balance on December 31 of the previous year.
  3. Find the divisor for your age in the Uniform Lifetime Table (for example 26.5 at 73, 24.6 at 75, 20.2 at 80).
  4. RMD = balance ÷ divisor.
RMD = prior year-end balance ÷ distribution period
