Overview of the Interest Calculator

The Interest Calculator shows how much a sum earns over time. Enter the principal, the annual rate, the number of years and how often interest is compounded, and it returns the interest earned and the maturity amount. You can also add monthly deposits, tax and inflation.

For one-off interest on a simple basis, use the Simple Interest Calculator. For a fixed deposit with a stated APY see the CD Calculator. The yearly table shows how interest builds each year.

How We Calculate

The calculator applies the standard financial formulas step by step.

  1. Convert the annual rate into a growth factor for each month, using your chosen compounding: (1 + rate ÷ n)^(n ÷ 12).
  2. Start with the initial amount and, for each month, add the growth and then the deposit (or the deposit first if you choose the start of the month).
  3. Raise the deposit once a year if you set an annual increase.
  4. Repeat for every month of the period, recording the balance each year.
  5. Subtract total deposits from the end balance to get the interest earned; divide by (1 + inflation)^years for the value in today's money.
balance = P × (1 + r/n)^(n·t) + deposits compounded
monthly factor = (1 + r/n)^(n/12)
interest = end balance − total deposits
