Work out the hours between a start and end time, deduct breaks, and total several shifts.
Subtract the start time from the end time, then deduct any unpaid break. 09:00 to 17:30 with a 30-minute break is 8 hours (8.00 decimal hours).
The Hours Calculator finds how long you worked between a start time and an end time, takes off an unpaid break, and shows the result both as hours and minutes and as decimal hours for payroll. Overnight shifts, where the end time is earlier than the start time, are handled automatically.
A second tool adds up several shifts so you can total a week or a pay period. For a full weekly timesheet with overtime and pay, use the Time Card Calculator.
Times are converted to seconds after midnight, so the maths is simple subtraction.
| Shift | Hours worked |
|---|---|
| 09:00–17:30, 30 min break, 5 days | 40 h 0 min (40 h) |
| 22:00–06:00 night shift, no break | 8 h 0 min |
| 08:45–13:15, 15 min break | 4 h 15 min |
| Mon 9–5 (30 min), Tue 10–6:30 (60 min), Wed 22–06 | 23 h 0 min |
Payroll systems usually want hours as decimals. Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the whole hours.
| Minutes | Decimal hours |
|---|---|
| 5 minutes | 0.08 |
| 10 minutes | 0.17 |
| 15 minutes | 0.25 |
| 20 minutes | 0.33 |
| 30 minutes | 0.50 |
| 40 minutes | 0.67 |
| 45 minutes | 0.75 |
| 50 minutes | 0.83 |
Subtract the start time from the end time and deduct any unpaid break. 09:00 to 17:30 minus 30 minutes is 8 hours.
Enter the actual start and end times. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator treats it as the next day, so 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours.
Hours written as a decimal: 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.5 hours. They make pay easy to calculate: decimal hours × hourly rate.
Divide by 60. 15 minutes is 0.25 hours and 45 minutes is 0.75 hours.
Enter the unpaid break length in minutes. It is subtracted from the time between start and end.
9:00 to 17:00 is 8 hours, or 7.5 hours with a 30-minute unpaid lunch.
Use the second calculator to list each shift, or use the Time Card Calculator for overtime and pay.
A single shift is up to 24 hours. For longer spans use the Time Duration Calculator with dates.
This tool gives hours. For pay with overtime, use the Time Card Calculator.
