Quick answer: how a bond is priced

A bond is worth the present value of its coupons plus its face value. A 10-year, 6% coupon bond with a face value of 1,000, priced to yield 8%, is worth ₹864.10 — a discount to face value.

Overview of the Bond Calculator

A bond pays regular coupons and returns its face value at maturity. Its price is the present value of those payments discounted at the market yield. This calculator finds the price from the coupon rate, yield and years to maturity, and — in the second tool — the yield to maturity (YTM) implied by the price you pay.

When market yields rise above a bond's coupon, its price falls below face value (a discount); when they fall, it trades at a premium. Use the Present Value Calculator for general discounting and the ROI Calculator to judge returns.

How We Calculate

The calculator applies the standard financial formulas step by step.

  1. Work out the coupon per period: face value × coupon rate ÷ coupons per year.
  2. Discount each coupon and the final face value at the yield per period.
  3. Price = the sum of those present values.
  4. For YTM, find the yield that makes the price equal the amount you pay (solved numerically).
price = Σ C ÷ (1 + y)ᵏ + F ÷ (1 + y)ⁿ

Bond Calculator — Frequently Asked Questions

How is a bond priced?

As the present value of all future coupons plus the face value, discounted at the market yield.

What is yield to maturity?

The annual return if you buy the bond at its current price and hold it to maturity, with all coupons reinvested at the same yield.

Why do bond prices fall when interest rates rise?

Because new bonds pay higher coupons, so older, lower-coupon bonds must sell at a discount to match the market yield.

What is current yield?

Annual coupon income divided by the bond's price. It ignores the gain or loss at maturity.

What is the difference between par, premium and discount?

At par the price equals face value; premium is above it; discount is below it.

Do bonds carry risk?

Yes: interest-rate risk, credit (default) risk and inflation risk. Higher yields usually mean higher risk.

How is the bond calculator calculated?

It uses the standard formula: price = Σ C ÷ (1 + y)ᵏ + F ÷ (1 + y)ⁿ The full method and a worked example are shown on this page.

Is my data stored?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing you enter is uploaded or saved.
