Calculate your body mass index and see your weight category.
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². A 70 kg adult who is 1.75 m tall has a BMI of 22.9 kg/m² — normal weight.
Body mass index (BMI) compares your weight with your height. It is a quick screening tool used by doctors and public-health agencies to spot weight categories that may carry health risks. Enter your height and weight in metric, US or stone units and this calculator returns your BMI, the WHO category and the stricter Asian-population category used in India, plus the weight range that corresponds to a healthy BMI for your height.
BMI is not a measure of body fat, so it can overestimate risk in muscular people and underestimate it in older adults. Pair it with waist measurements — see the Body Fat Calculator and the Body Type Calculator — and see the Healthy Weight Calculator for ranges. This tool is for adults (18+); children's BMI is read against growth charts.
The calculator applies the standard published formulas step by step.

For adults a BMI from 18.5 to 24.9 is considered the healthy range by the WHO. For Asian populations, 18.5 to 22.9 is commonly used.
It is a useful screening number but not a diagnosis. It does not separate muscle from fat and does not show where fat is stored.
Under the Asian cut-offs, a BMI of 23 to 24.9 is overweight and 25 or more is obese.
The adult BMI categories are the same for men and women, although women usually carry more body fat at the same BMI.

It uses the published formula: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)² = 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height (in)² The full method and a worked example are shown on this page.
