Estimate kidney function (eGFR) from your serum creatinine.
The CKD-EPI 2021 equation estimates GFR from creatinine, age and sex. A 50-year-old man with serum creatinine 1.0 mg/dL has an eGFR of about 92 mL/min/1.73 m² — stage g1 — normal or high.
The glomerular filtration rate (GFR) shows how well your kidneys filter blood. Doctors estimate it (eGFR) from a blood creatinine test. This calculator uses the 2021 CKD-EPI creatinine equation, which no longer includes a race coefficient, and also shows the older MDRD estimate and the kidney-disease stage (G1–G5).
An eGFR below 60 for three months or more, or signs of kidney damage such as protein in the urine, can indicate chronic kidney disease, so always discuss results with a doctor. Creatinine can be affected by muscle mass, diet and medicines. See also the Body Surface Area Calculator and BMI Calculator.
The calculator applies the standard published formulas step by step.
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Serum creatinine | 1 mg/dL (88 µmol/L) |
| eGFR — CKD-EPI 2021 | 91.7 mL/min/1.73 m² |
| eGFR — MDRD (older equation) | 79.1 mL/min/1.73 m² |
| GFR category | G1 — Normal or high |
| Category | eGFR (mL/min/1.73 m²) | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| G1 | 90 or more | Normal or high |
| G2 | 60–89 | Mildly decreased |
| G3a | 45–59 | Mildly to moderately decreased |
| G3b | 30–44 | Moderately to severely decreased |
| G4 | 15–29 | Severely decreased |
| G5 | Under 15 | Kidney failure |
| Serum creatinine (mg/dL) | eGFR |
|---|---|
| Creatinine 0.8 | 108 mL/min/1.73 m² |
| Creatinine 1.0 | 92 mL/min/1.73 m² |
| Creatinine 1.4 | 61 mL/min/1.73 m² |
| Creatinine 2.0 | 40 mL/min/1.73 m² |
| Creatinine 3.0 | 25 mL/min/1.73 m² |
About 90 mL/min/1.73 m² or higher in young adults, falling slowly with age. Values of 60–89 can be normal for older adults without other signs of kidney damage.
The updated creatinine equation recommended by US kidney societies, which removed the race coefficient used in earlier versions.
G1 (90+), G2 (60–89), G3a (45–59), G3b (30–44), G4 (15–29) and G5 (under 15); diagnosis also needs evidence of damage or a low eGFR for over 3 months.
Muscle mass, high-protein meals or supplements such as creatine, dehydration and some medicines.
It is less reliable in pregnancy, children, people with very high or low muscle mass, and during acute illness.
See your doctor, who may repeat the test, check urine protein, blood pressure and blood sugar, and explain next steps.
It uses the published formula: eGFR = 142 × min(Scr/κ, 1)^α × max(Scr/κ, 1)^−1.200 × 0.9938^age × 1.012 [if female] The full method and a worked example are shown on this page.
