To compress a JPG online, add your photos to the tool above, set the quality (70 to 80 gives a big saving with little visible change) and press Compress. The mozjpeg encoder rebuilds each JPG as a smaller progressive file in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, and a result that is not smaller is never substituted for your original.
Make JPG photos much smaller without a visible drop in quality. The compressor re-encodes each picture with mozjpeg, an encoder tuned for the smallest files at a given quality, so photos upload, load and email faster. It is a free tool from Websolindia, a New Delhi website design and SEO company that builds fast, image-optimised websites.
Unlike most online image tools, this one does not upload your pictures. Your browser decodes each image, re-encodes it with an open-source compression engine and shows you the exact before and after sizes. You can process up to 30 images at a time and download them one by one or together as a ZIP.
Once your image is ready, you may also want the Image Compressor to Under 100 KB, the PNG Image Compressor Online or the JPG to WebP Converter Online. All of our free image tools are listed in the Image Compressor Tools collection and the Websolindia Image Converter.
Use this table to choose settings with confidence.
| Quality | What you get | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 90–100 | Near-original detail, large files | Archiving, print |
| 80–89 | Excellent quality, noticeably smaller | Portfolios, hero images |
| 70–79 | Very good quality, big saving (recommended) | Websites, blogs, email |
| 50–69 | Fine detail starts to soften | Thumbnails, galleries |
| Below 50 | Visible blockiness | Only when size matters more than looks |
This is exactly what happens to your image, with no hidden step. You can check that nothing is uploaded by watching your browser's network tab while you use the tool.
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1. Read and decode | The file is read on your device and decoded to pixels by your browser. Orientation from the camera is applied. |
| 2. Resize (optional) | If you set a maximum width, larger images are scaled down with a Lanczos filter. Images are never enlarged. |
| 3. Flatten transparency | Transparent pixels are blended with your background colour: result = colour × α + background × (1 − α). |
| 4. Encode with mozjpeg | The pixels are compressed as a progressive JPG with optimised Huffman tables and your quality setting, using mozjpeg compiled to WebAssembly. |
| 5. Compare with the original | If the new file is not smaller than the original (and you did not resize), we return your original instead. |
| Setting | Default | Choices | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quality | 75 | 1 to 100 | 70–80 gives a big saving with little visible change. Lower is smaller. |
| Maximum width in pixels (optional) | Empty | 1 to 20000 | Larger images are scaled down, never up. |
| Background colour | #ffffff | Any colour | Fills any transparent area when saving as JPG. |
| What | Formula | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Size change | (new − original) ÷ original × 100 | Shown for every file. Negative means smaller. |
| Quality | Integer from 1 to 100 passed to mozjpeg | Higher keeps more detail and makes larger files. |
| Component | Role | Where it runs |
|---|---|---|
| MozJPEG (WebAssembly) | Compresses the JPG | Your browser |
| Browser image decoder | Reads your file | Your browser |
| Topic | Detail |
|---|---|
| Images per batch | Up to 30 at a time |
| File size | Up to 150 MB per image |
| Image dimensions | Up to about 120 megapixels; larger images are declined to protect your browser |
| Privacy | Images are processed in your browser and never uploaded |
| Browsers | Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari (WebAssembly is needed for AVIF, HEIC, TIFF and AI tools) |
| Metadata | EXIF and location data are not copied into new files |
It depends on the photo and your quality setting. In our test, a 6-megapixel photograph of 2.05 MB became about 0.57 MB at quality 75. The result row shows your exact before and after sizes.
Start at 75. Photos usually look identical to the original at 75 to 80. Raise it to 85 or more for detailed images, or lower it only if you need the smallest possible file.
No. JPG always discards some detail. If you need identical pixels, use the PNG Image Compressor Online in lossless mode or keep the original file.
If the file was already well optimised, our result was not smaller, so we return your original unchanged rather than a bigger file. Try a lower quality or set a maximum width.
No, unless you set a maximum width. Compression changes how efficiently the pixels are stored, not how many there are.
Yes. Modern formats are smaller still: try the JPG to WebP Converter Online or the JPG to AVIF Converter Online, then keep a JPG fallback for older software.
Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up, adds no watermark and has no daily limit. It is provided by Websolindia.
No. Your images are read and processed inside your browser on your own device. They are never sent to Websolindia or anyone else, which is why the tool is safe for private photos.
No. New files are created from the pixels, so camera details, GPS location and other embedded metadata are not copied. Keep your originals if you need that information.
Up to 30 images per batch and 150 MB per image. Images above roughly 120 megapixels are declined with a clear message rather than freezing your browser.
Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on computers, phones and tablets. Large images and AI or AVIF features run faster on a computer.
