How do I use the GIF Image Compressor?

About the GIF Image Compressor Online by Websolindia

Shrink animated GIFs for email, chat and websites. The compressor reduces the palette, can skip frames and resize, and stores only the pixels that change from one frame to the next. It is a free tool from Websolindia, a New Delhi website design and SEO company that builds fast, image-optimised websites.

Unlike most online image tools, this one does not upload your pictures. Your browser decodes each image, re-encodes it with an open-source compression engine and shows you the exact before and after sizes. You can process up to 30 images at a time and download them one by one or together as a ZIP.

Once your image is ready, you may also want the GIF to PNG Converter Online, the GIF to JPG Converter Online or the WebP Image Compressor Online. All of our free image tools are listed in the Image Compressor Tools collection and the Websolindia Image Converter.

When to Use the GIF Image Compressor

  • GIFs that are too large for email, chat apps or a CMS upload limit.
  • Reaction GIFs and product demos that load slowly on mobile.
  • Reducing the size of screen-recording GIFs, which have long stretches of unchanged pixels.
  • Keeping the GIF format when a platform does not accept video or WebP.

What to Watch For

  • Fewer colours can cause banding in photographic GIFs. Use 128 or 256 for photo-like animations.
  • Keeping every 2nd or 3rd frame makes motion slightly less smooth, though total timing is preserved.
  • If our result is not smaller, you get your original GIF back with an explanation.
  • For the smallest animations on the web, video or animated WebP is much more efficient than GIF.

How We Process Your Images — Our Method

This is exactly what happens to your image, with no hidden step. You can check that nothing is uploaded by watching your browser's network tab while you use the tool.

How the GIF Image Compressor works, step by step
StepWhat happens
1. Read the GIFThe file is read and every frame is composed onto a full canvas, honouring each frame's disposal method.
2. Reduce frames and sizeOptionally keep every 2nd or 3rd frame (delays are added together to keep timing) and scale frames down to your maximum width.
3. Build one paletteA single shared palette is quantised from sampled frames, with one entry reserved for transparency.
4. Store only changesFor each frame after the first, pixels identical to the previous frame are made transparent, so long unchanged areas cost almost nothing.
5. Encode and compareThe frames are written as an animated GIF. If the result is not smaller than your original, we return your original.

GIF Image Compressor Online — Frequently Asked Questions

How much smaller will my GIF be?

In our test, a 24-frame animation of 183 KB became 61 KB at 64 colours, and 27 KB with 32 colours and every second frame. Results depend heavily on the animation.

Will the animation still play at the same speed?

Yes. Frame delays are kept, and when frames are skipped their delays are added together so the total duration stays the same.

Does it keep transparency?

Yes. Transparent pixels remain transparent.

Why does my GIF look grainy after compressing?

GIF only supports 256 colours, and fewer colours cause visible bands or grain. Increase the colours or avoid dropping frames.

Is there a smaller format for animations?

Yes. Short MP4 or WebM video, and animated WebP, are far smaller than GIF. Use GIF only where those are not accepted.

Can I make a still image from a GIF?

Yes: the GIF to PNG Converter Online and the GIF to JPG Converter Online convert the first frame to a PNG or JPG.

Is the GIF Image Compressor Online free to use?

Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up, adds no watermark and has no daily limit. It is provided by Websolindia.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Your images are read and processed inside your browser on your own device. They are never sent to Websolindia or anyone else, which is why the tool is safe for private photos.

Does the tool keep EXIF and location data?

No. New files are created from the pixels, so camera details, GPS location and other embedded metadata are not copied. Keep your originals if you need that information.

How many images and how large can they be?

Up to 30 images per batch and 150 MB per image. Images above roughly 120 megapixels are declined with a clear message rather than freezing your browser.

Which browsers and devices does it work on?

Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on computers, phones and tablets. Large images and AI or AVIF features run faster on a computer.
