To compress an AVIF image online, add your AVIF files above, set a quality (45 to 65 suits most images), choose Balanced or Fast speed and press Compress. The AV1 encoder runs in your browser and can take a few seconds per image. Nothing is uploaded.
Re-compress AVIF images to get the smallest practical files. AVIF reaches good visual quality at low settings, so small adjustments make a large difference to file size. It is a free tool from Websolindia, a New Delhi website design and SEO company that builds fast, image-optimised websites.
Unlike most online image tools, this one does not upload your pictures. Your browser decodes each image, re-encodes it with an open-source compression engine and shows you the exact before and after sizes. You can process up to 30 images at a time and download them one by one or together as a ZIP.
Once your image is ready, you may also want the WebP Image Compressor Online, the JPG Image Compressor Online or the JPG to AVIF Converter Online. All of our free image tools are listed in the Image Compressor Tools collection and the Websolindia Image Converter.
Use this table to choose settings with confidence.
| Quality | Result | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 70–100 | Very high quality, larger files | Detailed photography |
| 55–69 | High quality (recommended) | Most website images |
| 40–54 | Good quality, very small | Thumbnails, backgrounds |
| Below 40 | Visible softening | Smallest files only |
This is exactly what happens to your image, with no hidden step. You can check that nothing is uploaded by watching your browser's network tab while you use the tool.
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1. Read and decode | The AVIF is decoded by your browser, or by a built-in decoder if your browser has none. |
| 2. Resize (optional) | A maximum width scales larger images down; images are never enlarged. |
| 3. Encode with libavif | The pixels are compressed with AV1 at your quality and speed setting, using libavif compiled to WebAssembly. |
| 4. Compare with the original | If the new file is not smaller than your original, we return your original instead. |
| Setting | Default | Choices | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quality | 55 | 1 to 100 | AVIF looks good at lower numbers: 45–65 suits most images. |
| Encoding speed | Balanced | Balanced; Fast (slightly larger) | AVIF is slow to encode; large photos take several seconds. |
| Maximum width in pixels (optional) | Empty | 1 to 20000 | Larger images are scaled down, never up. |
| What | Formula | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Size change | (new − original) ÷ original × 100 | Shown for every file. |
| Quality | Integer 1–100 passed to libavif | Higher means larger, sharper files. |
| Speed | Balanced = 7, Fast = 9 | Slower settings are not offered because they can freeze a browser tab. |
| Component | Role | Where it runs |
|---|---|---|
| libavif / AV1 (WebAssembly) | Encodes AVIF | Your browser |
| Topic | Detail |
|---|---|
| Images per batch | Up to 30 at a time |
| File size | Up to 150 MB per image |
| Image dimensions | Up to about 120 megapixels; larger images are declined to protect your browser |
| Privacy | Images are processed in your browser and never uploaded |
| Browsers | Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari (WebAssembly is needed for AVIF, HEIC, TIFF and AI tools) |
| Metadata | EXIF and location data are not copied into new files |
AV1 is a very computation-heavy codec. Running it inside a browser takes seconds per image. The Fast setting trades a slightly larger file for less waiting.
AVIF looks good at lower numbers than JPG. Start at 55, go up to 65 to 75 for detailed photos, or down to 45 for the smallest files.
AVIF is usually smaller at similar quality and supports HDR, but it encodes more slowly and is supported by slightly fewer programs. Compare with the WebP Image Compressor Online.
Chrome 85 and later, Firefox 93 and later, Safari 16.4 and later, and Edge 121 and later.
Yes. AVIF supports an alpha channel and the tool preserves it.

Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up, adds no watermark and has no daily limit. It is provided by Websolindia.
No. Your images are read and processed inside your browser on your own device. They are never sent to Websolindia or anyone else, which is why the tool is safe for private photos.
No. New files are created from the pixels, so camera details, GPS location and other embedded metadata are not copied. Keep your originals if you need that information.
Up to 30 images per batch and 150 MB per image. Images above roughly 120 megapixels are declined with a clear message rather than freezing your browser.
Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on computers, phones and tablets. Large images and AI or AVIF features run faster on a computer.
