To convert PNG to AVIF online, add your PNG files above, choose a quality (60 suits most images), press Convert and download the AVIF files. AVIF keeps transparency and is often far smaller than PNG. Encoding runs in your browser and can take a few seconds per image.
Convert PNG images to AVIF for dramatically smaller files with transparency intact. It suits illustrations, UI graphics and photos that you serve on modern websites. It is a free tool from Websolindia, a New Delhi website design and SEO company that builds fast, image-optimised websites.
Unlike most online converters, this tool does not upload your images. Your browser decodes each PNG file, converts it and creates the AVIF file on your own device. That keeps private photos private, avoids upload waits and keeps working on a slow connection once the page has loaded. You can convert up to 50 files at a time and download them one by one or together as a ZIP.

This table compares the two formats so you can decide whether converting is the right move.
| Feature | PNG | AVIF |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | PNG (Portable Network Graphics) | AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) |
| Origin | W3C Recommendation in 1996 | Specified by the Alliance for Open Media in 2019 |
| Compression | Lossless | Lossy and lossless |
| Transparency | Yes, full alpha (256 levels of transparency) | Yes |
| Animation | No (animated PNG is a separate extension) | Yes |
| Colour depth | Up to 16 bits per channel | 8, 10 and 12 bits; HDR capable |
| Typical file size | Large for photos, small for flat graphics | Often the smallest of the common formats |
| Best for | Logos, screenshots, graphics and anything needing transparency | High-quality web images where file size matters most |
| Browser support | Every browser, app and device | Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, Safari 16.4+, Edge 121+ |
| File extension | .png | .avif |
File size: AVIF is usually far smaller than PNG, especially for photographic images; flat graphics shrink less.
This is exactly what happens to your file. Nothing is hidden, and you can verify that nothing is uploaded by watching your browser's network tab while you convert.
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1. Read the file locally | Your browser reads the file from your device into memory. Nothing is sent to a server. |
| 2. Identify the format | We check the file's first bytes (its signature) instead of trusting the extension, so a PNG renamed to .jpg is still handled correctly. |
| 3. Decode the PNG to pixels | The image is decoded to raw red, green, blue and alpha pixels using your browser's built-in PNG decoder. |
| 4. Resize (optional) | If you set a maximum width, larger images are scaled down with an area-weighted filter. Images are never enlarged, and the proportions are always kept. |
| 5. Keep transparency | Transparency passes straight into the AVIF file, because AVIF supports it. |
| 6. Encode the AVIF | The pixels are written out as AVIF using libavif (AV1) compiled to WebAssembly, run inside your browser. Metadata such as camera details and location is not copied. |
| 7. Report the result | We show the dimensions, the sizes before and after, and the change: (new size − original size) ÷ original size × 100. For example, 500 KB becoming 350 KB is −30%. |
| Setting | Default | Range | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quality | 60 | 1–100 | Higher gives a sharper, larger AVIF. 50–70 suits most images. |
| Encoding speed | Balanced | Balanced / Fast | Fast finishes sooner and makes slightly larger files. Slower, smaller settings are not offered because they can freeze a browser tab. |
| Maximum width | None | 1–20,000 px | Scales larger images down. Never enlarges. |
| What | Formula | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Size change | (new − original) ÷ original × 100 | Shown for every file. Negative means smaller. |
| Downscale factor | min(1, maximum width ÷ width) | Applied only when you set a maximum width; never above 1. |
| Quality | Passed to the encoder as a number from 1 to 100 | The scale is encoder-specific, so the same number gives different results in different formats. |
Speed depends on your device and the image size. In our Chrome tests on a desktop-class processor, a 6-megapixel photograph took about 2 seconds to convert to WebP or PNG. AVIF is the slowest: about 2.5 seconds on Fast and about 7.5 seconds on Balanced. Phones and older laptops take longer, and images over about 120 megapixels are declined rather than risking a frozen browser.
| Format | Where it opens | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| PNG | Every browser, app and device | Logos, screenshots, graphics and anything needing transparency |
| AVIF | Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, Safari 16.4+, Edge 121+ | High-quality web images where file size matters most |
| This converter | Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. Needs JavaScript and WebAssembly | Private conversion on your own device |
Serve AVIF to browsers that support it and keep a JPG fallback for the rest, using the HTML picture element.

To get much smaller files: AVIF uses modern AV1 compression and keeps transparency. Smaller images mean faster pages and lower bandwidth.
Yes. AVIF supports an alpha channel, so cut-outs, logos and overlays stay transparent.
AVIF encoding is slow compared with JPG or WebP. In our Chrome tests a 6-megapixel image took about 2.5 seconds on Fast and about 7.5 seconds on Balanced on a desktop-class processor; mobile devices take longer.
Start at 60. For crisp UI graphics try 70 to 80; for the smallest photographic files try 45 to 55 and compare.
Use the HTML picture element with a PNG or WebP fallback, as shown in the code sample above. Compare with the PNG to WebP Converter Online for wider compatibility.
Yes, with the AVIF to PNG Converter Online. The PNG will be much larger but fully compatible.

No. Your PNG files are read and converted inside your browser, on your own device. They are never sent to Websolindia or anyone else, which is why this converter is safe for private photos and documents.
Yes. The new file is created from the decoded pixels, so camera details, GPS location and other embedded metadata are not copied. If you need to keep metadata, use a desktop editor.
Up to 50 files per batch and 150 MB per file. Images above roughly 120 megapixels are declined with a clear message rather than freezing your browser.
Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. It also needs WebAssembly, which all of those browsers include.
