I’m not new to SEO concepts, I understand most of the concepts (it’s actually quite simple, although most ‘SEO’ companies insist it isn’t and will throw ridiculous terminology into the mix to boost their ‘professional image’) and while I understand everything, I can’t understand why anyone would try to create links manually. Link development implies that webmasters harass the link to your site in question, when that’s probably the last thing they want to do on that particular day. Of course, there are rare occasions when the site your site is linked to is actually relevant and interesting to the webmaster you’re linking to, but in some industries – especially in more “niche” industries, these types of sites are far away and few.
White Hat SEO Techniques
Instead of simply requesting links, many articles now address the psychology of manipulating people (webmasters, yes, they are people) to link your site under the guise of a false relationship/friendship (of course, you can say that everything you like is genuine, but I would never have contacted them if I wasn’t looking for a link) and wasting time with that relationship to the stage where they could connect with you…once.
Manual link building seems (well, IS) a very time-consuming process, with what is essentially a very small payoff when you consider that you won’t continue to get links if you stop. Top search engines use link counting as an organic method to determine which sites are relevant to which search terms and how they should be ranked. By creating links, you are technically devaluing their efforts to rate your site. Surely, by that measure, link building isn’t a white hat process?
The Advantages of White Hat SEO
I believe the smartest approach (if you were to approach the webmaster of a site whose audience might find your site interesting and request that they be linked to) would be to simply email them a link asking them to take a look. ..then, if they really found it interesting, they could bond with it…and I’m afraid I’ve just contradicted myself with my previous psychological approach.
